If you love Gabrielle’s evolution as much as I do, here are some of her best fight scenes from Season 5 and 6. Complete with flips and kicks, sai techniques and hand-to-hand combat moves. Because Renee O’Connor is fucking awesome!
A pretty overlooked things in XWP is how easily armies of men pledge allegiance to the first woman who yells a little louder than their previous leader, be it Xena, Callisto or Livia. Like “We’re warriors fear us grrr” “Ayiyiyiyi” “K, we’re your army now.”
I think this says more about men’s nature than any pamphlets.
People have pointed out before that Xena does not shame other women or shame men for being feminine. Zero percent fem-shaming. She values feminine characters and traits instead and actually learns from them.
There’s more…
You know how much slut-shaming Xena did? None. Not even her past and highly evil self got shamed for having sex.
You know how many emo feelings Xena had despite her capacity for extremely instrumental, strategic military action? All of them. All of the feelings.
You know how much having a woman as a life partner damaged Xena’s self-identity? None. It actually just made it more awesome.
You know how many seconds it took Xena to deal with her cisgender privilege and act in pragmatic solidarity with a trans woman? Less than ten seconds.
Xena had more respect for her horse than most action heroes have for their own lives.
She offered more and more dignity to herself and other people throughout the show. It was part of her character’s development, part of her heroism.
And that is another way of articulating why Xena is so awesome.
I love that she got to have it all: romance, pain, joy, loss, etc. So often when the hero is a woman they only get a small piece of the total adventure, but not so here. Whether she was reveling in battle or brooding with guilt she simply was.
Lao Ma and Xena’s love scene from 3×07 “The Debt II.” This lyrical interlude is heavily influenced by the high-flying acrobatics of wuxia films such as A Touch of Zen and Butterfly and Sword. Here the warriors’ supernatural powers are being deployed not for battle, but for a moment of transcendent connection. By giving full expression to their love, the two women defy gravity, but more than that, they are defying the restrictive social and cultural boundaries that dominate their lives.
Hey, guys!
Here’s the thing. We all know that when it comes to strong female characters,
role models and legendary powerful women willing to protect the innocent, we
always think about Xena first. Mostly. Especially those of you who were growing up in
90s.
And I saw the beginning of the No
man’s land scene I thought of the “ready for battle” moment in opening credits
of Xena immediately.
So I asked @quietparanoiac, wonderful person and
my very good friend, to make a gifset for me. And she did. The one you see in
the post.
Hope you like it as much as I do.

This is beautiful
Love this. Especially since it is not competitive but just two equally awesome ladies.
I love how in this very last shot of them lying down together Gabrielle lays her hand over Xena’s midriff and Xena lifts her head up to look and then just settles herself back down again smiling. It’s like the moment when she realizes Gabrielle feels the same way she does about her and she’s finally able to show her true feelings for her without feeling guilty about it anymore or holding back. Because lesbihonest…. Xena fell first. Gabrielle had a bad case of hero worship for awhile but she didn’t fall in love first. Xena did. And in this shot you see Gabrielle start to show her affection for her instead of the other way around. It’s really cute and sweet.
I have a gif of the whole action. Probably my favourite gif of them.
