Can we please talk about the fact that Wolfgang’s most open smiles to Kala are the ones he gives her after she has done something clever? Because he loves her for her brain and he’s a proud boyfriend and I think I’ll go cry in a corner
My very favorite thing about this series is that there is absolutely no limit to how far the cluster will go for one another.
Will is compromised? Fine. He takes heroin for a year just to make sure that he can keep the rest of the sensates safe. Think about it.
He’s a cop. He’s a law abiding citizen but he has no qualms about shooting himself up just to keep whispers away from them.
Sun is about to be murdered? Not on their watch she’s not. Nomi dropped everything to hack her out of prison without a second thought.
Sun’s brother is within reach? Let’s go! All 8 of them, even cinnamon rolls Capheus, Kala, and Lito are there for the fight.
Wolfie is captured? Sensates assemble! The whole cluster is on it. So what if the plans not 100% yet. They have Wolfgang and we’ll never allow that. 8 people (11 counting Amanita, Hernando, and Daniela) drop their entire lives and fly out to London just to get a bargaining chip in hopes of getting Wolfie back, safe and sound.
Their relationship with eachother is the legitimate highlight of the entire show. It’s amazing, beautiful, and painful all at the same time.
Man, what a gorgeous show the Wachowski’s have given us. What a beautiful gift we have received. I hope it never ends.
They don’t say much, but they FIGHT for their loved ones
They don’t show emotions, but they PROTECT their loved ones
They’ll kill for survival, but they’ll DIE for their loved ones
They don’t smile much, but when they do, it comes from PURE happiness
I was SO HAPPY to see so much interactions between Sun and Wolfgang happened in this season – I loved this pair since Christmas special when they had this whole “if you need help” “I’m fine. If you need some air” “I’m good” then * both smirk * scene
There are so many things Sun and Wolfgang share in common
Both are the quiet ones in the cluster; they are badasses; and THEY DESERVE PEACE & HAPPINESS – and LOVE!
They might be strong on the outside, but they have soft heart inside; and that sometimes make these two people blame themselves for what they’ve done
Their mothers loved them; their fathers…one was abusive and the other was ignorant; and their other family members (like Steiner and Joong Ki) just couldn’t leave them in peace
One thing they don’t share in common, other than their fighting style, is that when Sun needs help, she asks for help. Whereas Wolfgang would NEVER, EVER ask for help – even when he’s being captured and tortured by Whispers
I really hope that in the end, both Sun and Wolfgang find their own peace (except rest-in-peace bullshit, I won’t allow it)
Favorite moments in season 2 (spoilers!)
2×02 Who Am I?
– I like that when they’re visiting each other, neither of them says ‘hi’ or ‘what’s up?’ Instead they just simply have a short eye contact and that’s it. The zoo scene sums up Sun and Wolfgang’s relationship. And we love this quiet-yet-we-know-each-other-by-just-looking-at-one’s-eyes. PERFECTION
– Not just from this scene, but most conversations between Sun and Wolfgang are short, very straightforward & concise…and that’s what makes their dynamic so real and sincere because we know both characters share a deep connection through their unspoken pain
– OK, I love Sun just the way she is. But I absolutely love her when she embodies Wolfang. Two words; and her level of being badass just exploded there. Hats off to Doona’s perfect portrayal of Wolfgang/Max
– In graveyard scene, everyone from the cluster talks to her from their heart…from their experience. What differentiates Wolfgang from rest of them is he’s the only one who says ‘the world would be better without’ people like Joong Ki and Wolfgang’s father. Revenge is a double-edged sword. It’s bittersweet. And Wolfgang has already had a taste of revenge..several times. However, I don’t think sweetness of revenge or his skepticism about justice are entire reasons why he says it. I think it’s because deep down he knows Sun is stronger than she thinks; strong enough to not only make Joong Ki pay for her father’s death but also take in the bitterness of revenge
– This is not an interaction between them, but I really wanted to go over this little parallel scenes. Another thing I love about Sun and Wolfgang is they don’t use their strengths to bully someone or to just show off. They use them to protect their loved ones when they are treated like shit by shitty peoplenot nicely
– I know I didn’t include “I would” in Gala scene. Doesn’t mean I don’t like it; it’s just kinda goes along with what I’ve written in graveyard scene. I didn’t want to be redundant. But yeah, I liked that scene too: Wolfgang in gangsta mode walking by Sun’s side while others are trying to stop her XD
– But back to the point, I personally like this scene more simply because I love when Wolfgang shows his gentle and caring side of him towards his cluster. Like when he cared for Will [x]. Also, we don’t really get to see Sun being afraid a lot (I mean of course, she’s a warrior), so it was kinda good to see her being weak and vulnerable for a moment but then quickly regaining her calmness after her cluster reassures she’s going to be fine. It shows how much Sun trusts her cluster; and how much her cluster cares for her (PLATONIC LOVE RIGHT HERE PEOPLE!)
I would say most interactions between Wolfgang and Sun happened during ‘sharing’ – resulting great action sequences, which also proves (again) that these two are not talkers; they’re fighters. Maybe that’s why they make an awesome pair!
I’ll admit, when I first heard about this plot-line of Sense8, about Kala being arranged to marry an Indian man but not wanting and falling in love with a white guy, I was very skeptical. I thought it would be some White Saviour narrative that would portray Desi men in a negative light and Desi women as needing to be ‘rescued’ by white men. But after watching, I am glad to see that I was wrong.
Most white saviour stories would feature a woman of colour who would be portrayed as ‘exotic’, demure, subservient, and unusually attracted to a white man whom she’ll become extremely devoted to, despite him not having done anything worth such attention or love. These stories include the operas Lakmé and Madama Butterfly, the musical Miss Saigon, and films such as Disney’s Pocahontas and the 1960 film The World of Suzie Wong. And even more, the woman of colour would usually become so helpless without the white man to save her, that when he whisks her in his arms, she’d gladly give up everything to be with him: her language, her culture, her family, etc. Even more, men of colour would be demonized in order to make her have no other choice but to run into the white man’s arms. It’s basically a way for them to project their sexual fantasies about women of colour since the days of European imperialism and colonialism.
Kala and Wolfgang, however, couldn’t be more different from the above narrative.
First of all, Rajan, Kala’s fiancé, is a good man. He genuinely cares about her and wants her to be happy. And while Kala does feel confused about the wedding, she does not feel ‘trapped’ or in need of rescue. In fact, Rajan even asks Kala if she wants to end the marriage when he sees that she’s not happy. And in no way is Kala ever ‘rescued’ from anyone, and she is definitely not a submissive person. She’s an emotionally strong person and she’s capable of taking care of herself. Kala is not subservient or portrayed as ‘exotic’, she’s human. The creators also handled the marriage situation in quite a sensitive way, showing that Rajan is a sweet man who truly cares about Kala, but her main conflict stems from the fact that she does not love him. And throughout the series, she can hold her own and is very resilient, yet a caring and gentle girl who wants to make her family proud.
Also, Kala does not give up her culture or her language at all. She’s still very much in touch with her religion and her devotion to Ganesha, which are treated respectfully. She is never portrayed as needing to be ‘saved from her barbaric culture’ or however those White Saviour narratives go. It’s actually her father-in-law who is skeptical about Hindu traditions and wishes to get rid of them, yet even so, he’s never demonized.
Now, let’s talk about Wolfgang. First of all, I am so glad that he’s not a White Saviour. Typically, these kinds of characters would have the following characteristics: learning the ways of the native people, becoming superior to them, and also find love with a woman of colour, who will still passionately love him even after he is involved with the death of a member of her family. They’re also typically cocky and dominant over the woman of colour, who all but sacrifices her entire life to be with him.
Wolfgang, however, does not have any of these characteristics. He’s a troubled individual who needs a lot of help, and Kala’s gentle nature gives him the emotional support that he needs. However, he does not see Kala as someone to be ‘rescued’. Rather, he thinks that she should stay away from him because he is dangerous. He listens to her and treats her as an equal, and he does genuinely care about her as well. Wolfgang also listens to her talk about her culture and heritage, not to humour her, but with a genuine interest and respect in the hopes of understanding her. In fact, as I mentioned earlier, Kala actually comes across as more emotionally strong than Wolfgang. Most White Saviour narratives portray the people of colour as irrational, angry, and overly-emotional while the white people are shown as logical and smarter. Yet Kala is quite an emotionally strong character, in contrast to Wolfgang, who has issues with his anger and is constantly at war with his own inner demons of the past. Yet Kala is like a light in his life, as she cares about him and helps him out by giving him the emotional strength and support that he desperately needs.
Not to mention, their interactions are always cute and sweet to watch. Tina Desai and Max Riemelt have quite the undeniable chemistry together, and they portray their characters so excellently throughout the show. Kala and Wolfgang has quite possibly become my top OTP, and I really hope to see more of their relationship in season 2.
