This week, you will have to forgive our loud, emotional and kinda off-key singing. Why? Because the Thirst Object of the week would’ve, that’s why. A snack or a full meal depending on your hunger level, a cooling beverage on a hot day, a babe clothed or in drag, a presence, a man. Whew, Patrick Swayze!
Like, hi, would you please pay attention to Patrick Swayze’s hands (the size of them relative to Baby’s; how they’re moving, the forearms they’re attached to etc.) in the gif below? Thank you for coming to our TED Talk.
First things first: if you watched Dirty Dancing and it didn’t change your life in some way, R.I.P. because you are clearly dead (PS: send us your family homestead address because we like to send flowers in times of family bereavement). Patrick Swayze epitomized a very specific type of graceful masculinity; a Marlboro man who can dance en pointe.
👆🏾Can you not see how motherfucker would fix your car, and then tenderly do you on the bonnet immediately after? Jesus. 💦
The thing about Patrick Swayze is how he embodied all sorts of masculinities, you know? His characters all had a matter-of-fact humanity to them, and while he wasn’t really troubling the Academy with Oscar-bait, he was a solid leading man, and we love him for what he made during his life.
Of course, we focused primarily on DD (so formative! so powerful, still!) but we also covered at some length a few of Swayze’s other projects: The Outsiders, the now-clearly oddly Orientalist Roadhouse (listen out for Nichole losing her damn mind during the clip we play!), Ghost, Point Break and of course To Wong Foo (Vida Boheme, my queen! 😭).
He was just… so much. Slim hips, wide shoulders, the cocky smirk that never seemed to land on cruel… Swayze looked like a fighter, but he also looked who tender and smart, a funny dude with a knack for comedy, and rough-hewn enough to sit atop a surfboard or a horse, and apparently a sweetheart to boot. Plus, he certainly had a gift for accurately doing the sex onscreen; see Nichole after class for more info about “the hip dip” when actors Do It Against A Wall. Wow, we’re crying with love/thirst.

I like how considerate Thor is. I like the fact that Thor… he was thinking about Valkyrie, he was just like, “I’ll go off and not only get a weapon. I’ll go get some clothes for her as well, to inspire her. Give her a sense of place. Help her get her identity back. She’s been running from the truth and running from her past.” He’s just given her an opportunity to embrace it, to acknowledge who she is. She’s a Valkyrie.
#this scene is SO on point #and it is SO much better than a kiss #which would have made me cringe #because it would be totally out of character #even for Thor IMO #because he has so much respect for Val #and being a gentleman #he would never have tried to do something he knows she is not ready for #and truth be told up until this point he cannot know she likes him #of course there is lots of chemistry and sexual tension between them #but he knows deepdown she is quite fragile #although she does not show it #he does not want to push her #because he knows she is not ready #I said it twice #I am rambling #god I love this ship #so much potential #thorkyrie
