Tidbits from SDCC 2017 The Gifted Panel:
- Matt Nix on where The Gifted fits in the X-Men universe. “One of the great favors that Days of Future Past did for all of us is establish that there are many streams. One answer is that we exist in one of those streams. This is its own universe, we don’t exist in the same timeline as any specific movie or comics. But there are shared characters.”
- Emma Dumont on Polaris: “She’s a daddy’s girl.”
- Jamie Chung on Blink: How do you practice tearing space? It’s quite funny — you look silly as hell doing it.
- At first, some of the young mutants aren’t sure what exactly their powers are. and their powers manifest as expression of their personalities and may change as the characters grow.
- Will there be X-Men in The Gifted? Matt Nix: “One of the things that come out in the show is, the X-Men are gone. Why are the X-Men gone? That will come out in the show. It’s not just that they’re too expensive for television.”
- On the Sentinels: “You will see robots.” Nix also says that exploring different forms of the Sentinels is a main point in the show, likening it to new models of phones.
- Matt Nix says the show is "Running in Empty with mutants.”
- Coby Bell’s character’s daughter died in a mutant attack, which is why he is going after them.
- Exec. Prod. Derek Hoffman says they will be using the X-Men universe to hold up a mirror to our own. For example: “ “How much freedom are we willing to give up for security?”
- Viewers will see more and more mutants as the Struckers are forced to go on the run from a hostile government, joining up with an underground network of mutants that must fight to survive. “The mutants you meet in the pilot are part of this underground network that is inspired by the underground railroad,” Nix said. “Over the course of the series, it’s their struggle to survive and also to keep this going. There are a lot of people who need help. How do they keep this underground network growing?”
