An inscription on a wooden beam tells about the story of the Pied Piper of Hameln and dates it to June 26, 1284.
Around that time, the town was infested with rats and nobody was able to get rid of them. One day, a traveling piper promised to relieve the town of the rats for a high wage. The man dressed in colorful clothes started to play his pipe and was soon surrounded by rats. When he saw no more rats coming, he led them out of town and into the river Weser where they drowned. The council, however, which had expected the man wo work for at least several months, said that this was way too quickly done and did not want to pay him the promised wage. Infuriated, the man left the town.
Some time later, the man came back on a Sunday, when all the adults were at church. Again, he played his pipe, but instead of rats, all the children came to listen to him. While playing music, he led the children out of the town and into the woods. 130 children had disappeared forever. The council of Hameln, however, prohibited playing music on the streets for all eternity.
Das Rapunzelhaus in Amönau, Hessen, Central Germany. In Amönau the former castle of the Lords of Hohenfels, the so-called Castle Amönau is located. Originally built in the 15th century, the most important part of emerged in 1615 – the summer house on the sandstone wall. This timber-framed pavilion was built to enjoy a cup of tea in a stylish atmosphere, and thus is the oldest tea house in Germany. This alone would not justify that busloads of Japanese and other tourists come to photograph the summer house. This is because the artist Otto Ubbelohde used it as a template for his illustration of the Rapunzel tower, and thus any connoisseur of Grimmâs fairy tales has seen this picture before. "Rapunzel" is a German fairy tale in the collection assembled by the Brothers Grimm, and first published in 1812 as part of Childrenâs and Household Tales. Its best-known line âRapunzel, Rapunzel, lass dein Haar herunter – let down your hair!â is an idiom of popular culture. The 2010 Disney US film âTangledâ is based on this story.
The earliest castle here was built before 1214 and expanded into two castles around 1294. In 1537, a lightning-bolt destroyed the upper castle. The present structures had been built by 1650. In 1764, another lightning strike caused a fire which destroyed some of the rebuilt sections. The castle has been partially rebuilt again since the 18th century, but is still largely ruined. Today, the castle ruins are among the most important Renaissance structures north of the Alps.
