Just fyi – many of the illustrations and statues of them show them with their breasts exposed. This is not because they are sexualising lesbians but because these women often used to open their shirts and expose a breast when they killed a man just so the man’s dying thought would be the realisation that he was killed by a woman.
Thing that is not talked about enough when this scene is discussed: the fact that Janeway doesn’t use a smokescreen to deflect Q’s advances. He’s the most powerful being in the universe, and he’s just declared sexual interest in her. Yet she doesn’t do what women everywhere have had to do for millennia when deflecting unwanted male attention. She doesn’t soften her rejection to save his male ego, even though he could squash her like a bug. She doesn’t take the out and say she’s already got a man, (even though Chakotay likely wouldn’t have minded) so thanks but no thanks and oh, isn’t timing a bitch? She just flat out tells him she’s not interested in the most ‘fuck off’ voice she’s got. It was the mid-90s, too. Kudos, KJ.
