The earliest castle here was built before 1214 and expanded into two castles around 1294. In 1537, a lightning-bolt destroyed the upper castle. The present structures had been built by 1650. In 1764, another lightning strike caused a fire which destroyed some of the rebuilt sections. The castle has been partially rebuilt again since the 18th century, but is still largely ruined. Today, the castle ruins are among the most important Renaissance structures north of the Alps.
