This
happened over two years ago but damn, the way Carol hesitantly opens
her arms to him still strikes me.

She
was so apprehensive and probably had a hundred scenarios of her
family rejecting her running through her head as she approached them.
And then in a split second Daryl runs – sprints – to her,
genuinely, utterly happy to see her. Daryl’s face crumbles into tears
of joy and relief virtually the moment he sees Carol, so as he runs
to her, she’s seeing his expression and it absolutely shocks her.
She lifts her arms very slowly, tentatively, like she
can’t quite believe it’s really happening.
And
I know this happened years ago but I still find it extremely adorable
and heartbreaking and beautiful that Carol is so cautious and unsure,
and Daryl – even though this is probably the first real hug he’s
ever initiated – just runs to her and throws his arms around
her, without a second’s hesitation.
Because
here, Carol also thinks that she’s unlovable. She’s been trying to
isolate herself from her family’s love, from Daryl’s love, so the
last thing she really expects is for him to hug her – but he
does, again, with absolutely no hesitation. And again, Carol is
shocked.
Because every time she thinks she won’t be loved or she
shouldn’t be loved, Daryl proves her wrong.
