This year’s Oktoberfest in München (Munich) starts on Sept 22 and ends Oct 7, 2018. Opening day festivities will begin at 10:00 h with the traditional tapping of the first keg at noon by the Munich mayor.
Oktoberfest dates back to 1810 when it started in celebration of the wedding between Crown Prince Ludwig and Teresa of Sassonia-Hildburghausen. It was such a hit that another one occurred around the same time the following year, and the tradition has continued almost every year since.
With an estimated 7.7 million liters of beer served and an annual visitor count of more than 7 million, it’s the largest folk festival for brewing in the world. Oktoberfest activities have grown over the years, spreading the festival earlier into September for better weather and milder nights. This year, overall drier-than-normal conditions are expected across southern Germany for the first week of the festival, so visitors have ample opportunities to enjoy the parades, bands, traditional Bavarian food/drink & carnival rides. Average high temps in Munich during late September range from 17-19 C (63-66 F), while overnight temps fall to 8-9 C (47-49 F).
