what i really love about ben sisko’s character is he isn’t a generic american, like most star trek americans, but he’s got a specific heritage. he’s benjamim lafayette sisko, a native of new orleans, with a unique culinary tradition, a connection to creole culture, and love of west african history. even his inclusion of tube grub into his dishes for nog’s sake is so very creole, the combination of cultures to produce a richer dish. riker never really felt alaskan and bones was southern by accent only, but sisko was uniquely louisianan, which contributed to making him a fuller character.
my favourite star trek scenes aren’t the ones where they’re going into battle, or time travelling, or solving mysteries. no. my favourite scenes are where they’re just living life and laughing in space. like that scene in “Timscape” in TNG, when Picard, Geordi, Data and Deanna are sat around the table in the beginning just discusssing and laughing about the conferences they visited (minus Data’s complete confusion of the situation), or that scene in “To the Death” in DS9 when Dax and Miles joke about how Weyoun is staring at Odo and Dax tells him to go and tell Weyoun to stand on his head and see if he does it. these are seriously the best scenes. they warm my heart. they make star trek real and these are the scenes that most bring it to life in my eyes
And these scenes are considered “filler” or superfluous, often cut, and almost totally absent from a lot of modern shows in favor of more action/sex/plot. It’s criminal. Because these “throw away” scenes are absolutely the best character moments, because they don’t matter to the plot and thus aren’t over analyzed and filled with hidden meaning. They’re just fluff to pad for time or setup a plot. And in being unimportant they’re allowed to be so much more substantial than plot/action/sex scenes that writers poor over and stress about. And soon they’ll be totally gone because plot/action/sex. Sigh.
I mean. The Quark-Garak “root beer” scene was a filler scene, literally just there because they needed to add a minute and a half to the show, and it’s one of the most iconic scenes in DS9.
REVIEWS FOR VENOM JUST CAME IN AND IT’S A 28% ON ROTTEN TOMATOES!!!!!! THIS MOVIES GONNA BE SO FUCKIN FUNNY IM SO EXCITED. GOD I LOVE TERRIBLE SPIDERMAN MOVIES
“If you replaced Tom Hardy for Steve Martin in “All of Me,” and switched out Lily Tomlin for a wad of chewed-up black licorice, you’d have “Venom.”“
“When a major fight scene resembles a pair of black pants caught in a white wash, it’s fair to say you haven’t taken the audience with you.”
“It’s a train wreck of a movie, mixing and matching wildly dissonant tones, bizarre plot contrivances, and a truly unique lead performance.”
“Tom Hardy seems to be trying to be the first actor to win an Oscar and a Razzie for the same performance.”
“A film that feels like what you’d expect from a below average superhero flick circa 2004, like Ghost Rider or Fantastic Four.”
^ some of my fave critic review excerpts. i have never been more excited
some more
“The movie is so ridiculous that many viewers will at least be entertained in a dumbfounded way.”
“Think Affleck Daredevil. Think Ang Lee Hulk. Think Halle Berry Catwoman. That’s… I mean, that’s really all there is to be said, I think.”
“This is a movie that somehow slipped through a wormhole from 2004. That’s my biggest take. It’s a movie that spilled from the pre-MCU era through a crack in time and space… The humor, the story beats, everything right down to the Eminem theme song feels like it emerged Kimmy Schmidt style from a sealed off early ‘00s bunker.”
“Sorry to say that Venom is pretty much a complete failure — a tonal mess that feels 15 years old, ignoring the storytelling strides that the superhero genre has made in recent years.”
“Not sure I had the intended reactions to some scenes, but fun is fun — even when it’s totally ridiculous, right? It’s too bad they didn’t go for the R rating, though.”
“The cast seems to all know they’re in a darker superhero movie, except Tom Hardy who is basically remaking Jim Carrey’s Liar Liar.”
“At one point Tom Hardy and Venom make out.”
gonna go see it just for the make out honestly
I was completely fine and then “At one point Tom Hardy and venom make out”
Knight-in-shining-armor JAMMF is one of my favorite JAMMFs. Arriving at the EXACT right moment when Claire is officially in dire straights at the witch trial. She’s being whipped as the villagers cheer on. Jamie is ready to take on the entire village of Cranesmuir to protect Claire. Dual-wielding his sword and dirk, keeping the angry villagers at bay, while telling off those awful examiners is my JAM(MF). Your kilt isn’t made of boyfriend material, Jamie. That’s 100% husband material.
